Anne and Matt take a pottery throwing class
- At Greyrock Clay Center in Fort Collins, we signed up for an 8 week Throwing I class and learned how to use a wheel to make pottery.
- The pictures above are some of the pots we made. I'll update it later with more. Most of these pots were not good enough to keep but we did anyhow, just to practice with different skills and glaze colors.
- See a movie of Anne at the wheel
- The steps to make a pot are:
- While keeping the clay centered, push it up and back down to get proper consistency.
- Drop a hole into the center, then widen the hole.
- Pull up the sides to make it taller and thinner walled (this is what Anne is doing in above movie).
- After about 3-4 pulls, you can shape the pot to desired shape.
- Remove pot from wheel and let it dry a few hours/days.
- Put partially dried piece upside down onto wheel, hold in place with clay balls, then trim bottom to be flat.
- "Bisque" fire the piece in kiln, then it becomes hard.
- Glazing step: add molten wax to bottom (to not accept glaze), then dip and/or paint multiple layers of glaze colors.
- Final glaze firing and voila!
