Itinerary Description:
On day 5 we left Loreto. We originally had planned to head west on dirt tracks to Scorpion bay but the weather on the west Pacific coast was a little cold and wet so we stayed on the relatively warm and sunny east coast.
As we headed back north on Hwy 1 we saw a beautiful beach with palapas for camping and a couple of cafes at Playa El Coyote just south of Mulege.
We spent 2 nights camping along with some cool well traveled neighbors. I got to sail a tandem Hobie Adventure Island with a guy from Washington the first day.
On day 6 we went on a loop ride west from Mulege into the mountains. Partway through it, Meredith the trooper that she is, had enough abuse and those 2 decided to turn back so I went on alone. It got harder!
This was one of my favorite rides of the trip. It went up a beautiful valley, crossing the wide dry riverbed several times as it headed north up a valley toward the ruins of Xmission Guadalupe, then east over a ridge and down another valley and more dry riverbeds.
It was not a beginner loop but not super difficult as the 2-track road is traveled by vehicles and any rocky or sandy spots are pretty well packed down. However I was glad to have my knobby tires.
Way up in the mountains I ran across a school by itself at a place called San Isidro and all the kids were outside sitting around, so I stopped to check it out and ended up eating with them and practicing my spanish. The schoolmaster was a very nice guy and welcomed me.
I came back east through San Jose de Magdalena and ended up back in Mulege and ran across the crazy Irishman named Sean that shipped a Honda Cub 50 to Alaska and is riding it all the way to South America - see HondaVsTheWorld.com
